This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
