Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the prestigious cup on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty win.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
